8 "Home Alone" Filming Locations To Check Out During the Holidays

At first, Kevin says nervously, "Oh no, my family's in Florida and I'm in New York." Then he smiles. The primary filming location for ‘Home Alone’ is located over at 671 Lincoln Avenue in the charming village of Winnetka in Cook County, north of Chicago. This is the location of the multi storied McCallister house, which serves at the playground for Kevin’s creative home defense traps. The Murphy house, where the mouthy young Mitch Murphy lives is also located nearby at 656 Lincoln Avenue.

The comment, posted by Kathryn Rydz, states “Sorry I knew this extra and still friends with his ex. ” A major point the commenter focused on, all other issues aside, was “Who was the actor if not Elvis? “Elvis” was, after all, an extra with no speaking lines, so he wouldn’t be listed in the credits of the film.

Kevin finds the address in his dad's contacts when he quickly realizes that the house is undergoing a full renovation; it's also where Kevin leads Harry and Marv on the night of the toy store robbery. At the airport, Kevin looks out at Long Island City's Pepsi-Cola sign and the East River skyline, and the screen flashes to and from various cityscape shots. We get a sense of the enormity of the place and the tiny-ness of this child.

The story line of ‘Home Alone’ follows the mischievously resourceful little boy Kevin McCallister, who has a proclivity for creating trouble, much to the chagrin of his harried mother and absent-minded father. Kevin’s entire extended family is taking a vacation to Paris, France. However, trouble is afoot in the neighborhood as a couple of robbers start casing the houses, with their eye on the McCallister house next. Little do they know that Kevin is no ordinary kid, and they are about to walk into a whole new world of pain inside Kevin’s heavily booby-trapped home in some truly uproarious sequences. A Google search on “Elvis in Home Alone” returned about seventeen million results—a bit more than I wanted to explore, but I had to start somewhere.

Home Alone actor Senta Moses Mikan spoke on how long the O'Hare Airport scene took to film and how chaotic the experience was. Kevin springs by the Van Cleef and Arpels store on Fifth Avenue, and hurriedly stops to buy a few necklaces off a street vendor. At the Miami airport, security tells Kevin's parents it's unlikely he'll be anywhere but still stuck in Chicago. The camera pans to the South Street Seaport's erstwhile Fulton Fish Market . A backpack-toting Kevin crosses the street; meanwhile a white truck makes a turn, honks at him, and rolls up the back to reveal Harry and Marv. They're recently out of prison and stowing away with a shipment of seafood on ice.

Marv is skating while Harry is reading the paper and plotting how to get some cash. During the holidays, Harry says, "the only stores that are going to have cash on hand are those that deal in moderate priced goods." He points to a full-page ad for Duncan's Toy Chest. "There's nobody dumb enough to knock off a toy store on Christmas Eve," Harry jibes. In the John Hughes-Chris Columbus collaboration, Macaulay Culkin returns as maligned youngest child Kevin McCallister, separated from his family once again during what's supposed to be the happiest time of the year. Kevin’s Uncle Rob owns the townhouse on 95th Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue .

And to add to his wonderful legacy, he was also the little known extra at the center of one of the most famous movie myths of all time. Kevin makes a 911 call from an Upper West Side phone booth and tells the dispatcher that the thieves who robbed Duncan's Toy Chest will be in the park at 95th Street. "Look for fireworks. They've got a gun." Then he slips on ice, and the dastardly duo walks him into the park. Ultimately, the Pigeon Lady throws feed onto the very sticky Sticky Bandits, swarms of pigeons peck away, and Kevin is able to set off fireworks to alert the police to their presence.

The O'Hare-Orly flight in the movie takes place in the morning as opposed to being an early evening flight in real-life. Special thanks to the family of Gary Grott for speaking with me and sharing Gary’s story with all of us. I followed the work Stiller referenced and found the Facebook page of Gary Grott. I searched through his public photos and although there were none that dated to 1990, it seemed to be the same man that appeared in Home Alone. I compared several images side-by-side with a screenshot of “Home Alone Elvis.” Although several years older, the facial features, hair style, and thick beard matched up. The airport from which the family leaves is, of course, O’Hare International Airport.

The statue at Grand Army Plaza points the way across the street to the hotel. Crossing the busy intersection here, at 59th Street, is where Marv and Harry first bump into Kevin. Kevin marches up the steps to the old World Trade Center complex, nine years before it would be no more.

The myth was even brought up on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, when Macaulay Culkin appeared as a guest . Although the “Elvis” myth was mentioned, it wasn’t actually addressed by the actor. I eventually came across a YouTube video entitled “Elvis Presley in Home Alone DEBUNKED” , that claimed to have done just that … debunked the myth. John Stiller, who created the video, points to a comment made on the website Behind the Curtain, a weekly blog by conspiracy fiction author C.R.

Storyline

I explained what I was doing and that my research had led to his father most likely being the actor. I expressed my hope they could give me some confirmation either way. I was delighted when Roman responded to me the next day and was enthusiastic to talk about his father.

The DC-10 that flew the McCallisters to Paris in the first film was a -10 series, identified by only two central landing gears, which in real-life is only used on domestic flights. The -10 series has a range of only 3500 miles, making it impossible to do transatlantic services. The DC and -40 series are the only DC-10s that have a transatlantic range. The McCallister family flew on Paris on the airline's McDonnell Douglas DC-10.
